“Best Practices Guidelines” – within the Thailand Property Market: |
In recent years we have seen a large increase of Swedish affiliated property companies commencing real estate developments in Thailand primarily geared towards Swedish buyers. This has grown considerably in size becoming an essential investment and business as well as a significant part of the Thailand-Sweden relationship affecting thousands of people.
The Second Home Market in Thailand is an extension of Tourism and linked to it. The tourists – with positive impressions – become repeat visitors with an increasing number wishing to Long Stay and acquire a Second Home in Thailand bringing significant investments and spending with them as well as generating more Visitors and Tourism.
The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Thailand has initiated a Project aimed at adhering to Best Practices within the Thailand property sector geared towards Buyers, Brokers, Investors, Developers of property in Thailand and all other Stakeholders using the Chamber platform and Member Network as the vehicle. SAS Planting Trees Trip Bangkok: |
SAS Bangkok and the ladies from various Nordic women’s networks in Bangkok planted 70 trees in a government-owned semi-jungle setting in the outskirts of Bangkok. The Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish and Thai participants had learnt about SAS environmental initiatives in a Thai natural surroundings. The initiative was to show SAS takes climate change seriously having one of the most ambitious environmental programs of any airline - to be carbon neutral by 2050, options for passengers a carbon offset option when they fly, a pioneer of efficient green flights.
Each of the ladies attached a tag to each sapling, dedicating the young tree to children or loved ones. One of our planted trees has a tag, which says "For the future of all the world's kids". |

Update on Immigration Issues - Thai Immigration has recently introduced: |
· A relaxation of an employing company’s financial criteria to support an application by a foreign employee to extend their non-immigrant visa category ‘B’. This appears to be influenced by the current global financial crisis.
· The limiting to 15 days only of permission to remain in the Kingdom for foreigners who simply cross the border on a ‘visa run’ for foreigners who would otherwise get permission to stay in the Kingdom for 30 days. Foreigners who enter by air will still get the 30 days. This appears to be an effort by the Thai Immigration to cut out (or reduce) the use of ‘visa runs’ by foreigners who wish to remain indefinitely in the Kingdom.
· Foreigners – particularly visiting relatives or friends – should be made aware that if they apply for a 60 day Tourist Visa before entering Thailand by paying a fee of THB 1,900 to an Immigration Office within Thailand they can extend that Tourist Visa by another 30 days thereby increasing the stay to a total of 90 days. Because relatives and friends frequently arrive in Thailand without a visa and get a permission to stay only for 30 days they have difficulty to extend their stay.
· Please also note that Thai Immigration has ceased to issue re-entry permits at airports. All re-entry permits must now be applied for at the major Thai Immigration Offices and not at the Airport Immigration offices.
· Please consult with your legal advisor and/or Thai Embassies / Consulates for further advice. |

Scandinavian Airlines Opens Its Doors To Travel Agents at Suvarnabhumi
In October, Scandinavian Airlines took two groups of travel agents, media and travel bookers from corporate customers to inspect SAS facilities at Suvarnabhumi airport.
The inspection included a briefing by the SAS airport manager, a survey of SAS’ check-in rows and the Star Alliance lounges. The highlight of the day was the onboard inspection of the SAS A330-300 which had been made ready for its return flight to Copenhagen. The visitors tried out the Economy, Economy Extra and Business Class seats. The visiting agents particularly enjoyed stretching out on the spacious blue 170° reclining sleeper seats in Business Class. Cabin crew displayed actual meal samples. For many, the highlight was sitting in the pilot’s seat in the cockpit. SAS General Manager and Director for Southeast Asia, Mr Hakan Olsson, who joined both inspections, said: “Seeing is believing. We tell agents about SAS’ commitment to technology, design, comfort and Scandinavian hospitality all the time. But today, without actually flying to Europe with us, they felt it for themselves.
Many of them are now much more confident and better informed to sell seats for us.” |

Legal Update on the Development of the Draft Retail and Wholesale Businesses Act:
In October 2007 the Cabinet approved the latest draft Retail and Wholesale Businesses Act as proposed and amended by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC). MOC hopes that the new law will balance the regulatory power of national and local commissioners, who will regulate the retail business. If this law is passed, it will create a regulator specifically for the sector and limit expansion by big retail chain, the large operators will need to request a license from MOC. As such, it will cause the expansion of modern trades to be more difficult and time consuming than the present.
