Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness caused by the dengue virus, is a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical regions like Bangkok.  While symptoms can range from mild to severe, the potential for serious complications like dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) makes prevention crucial.  Although only a small percentage (around 10%) of those with severe symptoms have DHF or DSS, the risk of death becomes significant if these complications are not promptly addressed.  Fortunately, there was a very low mortality rate for dengue fever, with less than 1% of cases proving fatal.  Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to maintaining this positive statistic.

Symptoms to watch for

🔹Sudden high fever (up to 105°F or 40°C)

🔹Headache

🔹Muscle and joint pain

🔹Nausea and vomiting

🔹Red rash or spots in the abdomen, arms and leg, and blackened stools

🔹Fatigue

Diagnosis and treatment

Dengue fever is diagnosed based on symptoms and medical history, with potential blood tests for confirmation. There is no specific cure, but treatment focuses on supportive measures like rest, fluids, pain relievers, and fever reducers.  In severe cases, hospitalisation may be necessary.

Prevention measures

The best overall prevention method is to avoid mosquito bites:

🔹Use insect repellent

🔹Wear long-sleeved clothing and pants

🔹Eliminate standing water sources around your home
