In 2023, we're revelling in the extraordinary as Sweden reaches its quincentenary, commemorating an impressive five centuries of independence!  While the spotlight shone brightly on Sweden's National Day on June 6 (which has already passed), the jubilant celebrations continue to echo throughout the entire year!

Rewind 500 years:

On 6 June 1523, Gustav Vasa ascended to the throne as Sweden's king, elected by an assembly in the historic Strängnäs, only 59 kilometres west of Stockholm.  This pivotal moment witnessed Sweden leaving the Kalmar Union and became an independent state.

SweCham was very honoured to participate in the festivities at the Swedish Residence last Thursday, 16 November.  The Embassy played host to a reception, extending a warm welcome to H.E. Mrs. Anna Hammargren, the new ambassador of Sweden in Thailand.  The occasion also marked Sweden's remarkable 500 years of existence and the 50-year reign of King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Once again, heartfelt congratulations to Sweden for this monumental milestone!
