Thailand is currently in the hottest season of the year. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) advised citizens to beware of the heat, especially vulnerable groups, as the weather is expected to remain hot and sunny until early May. During these boiling days, let’s beware of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Heat Exhaustion is when the body is overheating but does not need emergency medical treatment if the symptoms can be released or cool down after 30-minute while Heat Stroke requires emergency medical help. If left untreated, heat stroke can harm multiple organs instantly. In the worst case, it can lead to long-term disability or death.
The symptoms can happen in both adults and children even though children may become more sensitive.
Risk factors include age, people with chronic disease(s) and sudden exposure to hot weather.
Signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke include:
Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat
Heavy sweating
Faintness
Dizziness
Fatigue
Weak, rapid pulse
Low blood pressure upon standing
Muscle cramps
Nausea
Headache
The symptoms can be released by cooling down the heat, such as loosing patient’s clothing, rest in a cool place and drink cool fluids.
