- NIST International School Students Win Global Awards
Students from NIST have been recognised for their innovative solution at the 2022 Diamond Challenge < Back NIST International School Students Win Global Awards 22 Mar 2023 We would like to offer big congratulations to the students from NIST International School in Bangkok who have been recognised for their innovative solution at the 2022 Diamond Challenge, a global entrepreneurship competition for high school students. The team, led by Mix, Setsiri Chaiyosburana, was awarded ‘The Global Innovation Prize,’ one of the only two such prizes awarded to the 700 teams from 37 countries and 28 states who competed in the competition. The team presented NANO-L, an anti-pathogenic coating that incorporates silver nanoparticles to effectively eliminate pathogens. What sets NANO-L apart from other anti-pathogenic coatings is the environmentally friendly production process it employs. Sugarcane leaves are used to create silver nanoparticles, which were inspired by Setsiri Chaiyosburana's trips to visit his grandparents in Kanchanaburi, where he witnessed sugarcane fields emitting plumes of black smoke during the burning season. NANO-L's remarkable achievements go beyond the Diamond Challenge Global Innovation Prize, as it also received acclaim in other international competitions such as the iCAN competition in Canada, and the WICO and Inventions Geneva competitions. Setsiri hopes that the accolades they have received will inspire more opportunities for Thai youth inventors to showcase their practical and innovative ideas. - SweCham Attended the PACC 2023: Public Relations Project on the Public Service Center for Investors and Foreigners
On 22 August, SweCham team members attended an anti-corruption event hosted by the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, also known as PACC. The focus was on the public service centre for investors and foreigners. Secretary General of PACC Bhumivisan Kasemsook introduced several issues and goals. Raising Thailand’s CPI Score, he emphasised the need to elevate Thailand’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score and that the PACC is committed to having a reliable Complaint Centre to improve foreign investors’ confidence by providing a dependable avenue for lodging complaints. < Back SweCham Attended the PACC 2023: Public Relations Project on the Public Service Center for Investors and Foreigners 22 Aug 2023 On 22 August, SweCham team members attended an anti-corruption event hosted by the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, also known as PACC. The panel discussion comprised leaders from the Thailand Chamber of Commerce, the Strategic Transformation Office, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority. They discussed: Three Key Points: Inconvenience, lack of transparency and uncertainty. Legal Reforms: The need for urgent law reform was highlighted, along with focusing on ease of doing business. Public and Private Sector Involvement: Both sectors were encouraged to collaborate in the fight against corruption. The panel discussion highlighted a few different Transparency Initiatives: Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA): The BMA uses this website, traffy.in.th , to facilitate complaints ranging from corruption to noise. ISO 37001: Implementation of an anti-bribery management system. The Final Takeaways of the seminar are, Individual Responsibility: ‘Silence lets corruption grow; see something, say something!’. Continuity: Anti-corruption efforts must continue irrespective of who is in the government. Whistleblower Protection: Safeguarding whistleblowers and encouraging reporting are crucial steps. The Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Thailand (SweCham) promotes Swedish business interests, offers networking events, and supports trade and investment between Sweden and Thailand. The Story About SweCham The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce (SweCham) was inaugurated in 1989 by Their Majesties HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia of Sweden, and has 35 years since its existence, established itself firmly within the Thai-Swedish and international business community in Thailand. Today, the SweCham has members ranging from well-known multinational companies to small start-ups and local companies, making the Chamber an important trade association representing a range of businesses in Thailand. SINCE 1989 The Chamber conducts an essential role in the Thai-Swedish business community and continuously works to identify business- and trade problems and opportunities. As such, the Chamber provides regular business opportunities for its members through a variety of functions and activities, and it continuously seeks to develop these activities to empower the growing Swedish business community. Khun Ant is a third-year student at Mahidol University International College, majoring in Media and Communication with a concentration in Integrated Media Communication. She’s also interested in strategic communication, event management, and digital media. During her internship at SweCham, Khun Ant will serve as the Media and Communications and Event Support Intern. She is motivated to explore the experience of assisting Swedish business sectors and other organisations that align with Sweden’s values of sustainability, innovation, and ethical growth. To keep you updated with Thailand's economy, a summary of the World Bank's Thailand Monthly Economic Monitor, May 2023 has been prepared for you. < Back World Bank: Thailand Monthly Economic Monitor 31 May 2023 World Bank: Thailand Monthly Economic Monitor summary The economy is moderately expanding as consumption grows with support from the recovering tourism and labour market. In contrast, manufacturing production and exported goods were in decline due to the decline in external demand. Tourism has picked up from the previous months with a higher number of Chinese visitors and tour groups. There is also an increase in visitors from India, ASEAN, and Europe. Exported goods in March 2023 had the lowest rate compared to the other months of the year, but Thailand is still performing reasonably well compared to the neighbouring countries in Asia. Inflation rate decreases due to wide-range price reductions with lower core and raw food inflation. On the other hand, the energy price inflation increases. As a result of the decline in global oil prices, the government imposes caps on energy prices to alleviate inflation. Fiscal deficit decreases but as the government introduces the cost-of-living support measure, the deficit will remain high. Measures such as electricity price caps would require government subsidies from the central budget. The government also impose a tax cut on diesel to help with the increasing oil price. The government suggested four measures for tax reform: 1) reviewing tax structure; 2) adjusting the system with digital economy; 3) tax reduction for the environmentally friendly activities, and 4) fairer tax approach. These goals will accelerate fiscal consolidation under the medium-term budgetary plan. Thai Baht appreciates in line with the Nominal Effective Exchange Rate as a result of the rise in account surplus. The causes of the surplus were reduction in oil imports and an increase in tourism in the past months.
