Jönköping Internship Programme About the programme: The Swedish Chamber of Commerce (SweCham) in collaboration with the School of Engineering at Jönköping University in Sweden is launching the Talent Mobility - Jönköping Internship Programme , designed to connect our valued members with talented students seeking practical, hands-on experience. This program offers you the opportunity to host an intern for approximately five months, providing them with a valuable placement within your company, offering a fantastic way to support emerging talent while gaining a fresh outlook on your business challenges and opportunities. This partnership underscores SweCham's commitment to advocacy on talent development, specifically by facilitating educational and professional growth through exchanges between Jönköping University students and the Thai-Swedish business community. By supporting students participating in these activities, SweCham aims to strengthen the human capital pipeline essential for enhancing bilateral trade and investment. June Students apply for studies and internships in Bangkok. July - August Selection of students and CV preparation. 1 September CVs sent to the Chamber for the student-company matching . September - Mid October Placement arrangements by the Chamber. End of October Students receive placement confirmation. November - December Students prepare for transfer (flights, visa, accommodation). January Students arrive and begin their studies. Mid/End of January Internships start, continuing until mid-May. Jönköping University (JU) has become a part of the European University Initiative through their alliance @EULiST. < Back Jönköping University has become a European university 7 Jul 2023 Jönköping University (JU) announced they has become a part of the European University Initiative through their alliance @EULiST. The European University Initiative is an initiative that aims to strengthen strategic partnerships between higher educational institutions in the European Union. With Jönköping University’s participation in this EU Initiative, new opportunities for international cooperation are expected to emerge. Agneta Marell, President of JU, says that participating in this initiative will open many doors for Jönköping University. The European University Initiative (EUI) is a European Union programme focused on the cross-border activities of the university systems in the EU. For a university to join the EUI, the academic institution must be an alliance member. Jönköping University is a part of the EULiST; it comprises ten members with a shared mission, the alliance aims to link society, science, and technology. “A major aim of the collaboration will be to develop educational and research initiatives which contribute to addressing social and global challenges,” says Nerrolyn Ramstrand, the President’s Advisor for Internationalisation. < Back APAC SwedCham Webinar: After the Storm: Sourcing Trends in China and Southeast Asia, 15 November 2023 On 15 November, SweCham and ARC Consulting hosted a webinar with Marcus Sohlberg, Business Development Director at ARC Consulting, on the topic Sourcing Trends in China and Southeast Asia and how they develop over time. Trade values are rising in first half of 2023, though being lower than 2021-2022. Global factors affecting trade include geopolitical tensions, economic weakness, trade restrictions, industrial output slowdown, inflation, and high interest rates. The top three Southeast Asian sourcing countries are: Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia. Although China's reopened borders have a negative impact on the other sourcing countries, Thailand's automotive, agriculture, and food sourcing sectors are thriving, while for Malaysia there is increased sourcing in electronics and batteries for EVs. Currently, relocating sourcing from China has decreased, possibly due to prior relocations. However Southeast Asia sees a positive trend, with companies inclined to keep or relocate sourcing and manufacturing to the region. The top three risk factors companies see in China are: increasing costs, unstable supplier performance, and increased tariffs. Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, the concerns include increasing costs, unstable supplier performance, and a lack of supply skills. The reasons for relocation include cost savings, risk mitigation, and improved logistics. Interestingly, supply chains currently face disruptions due to new ESG policies, but also the EU Carbon Border Tax, Carbon Peak and Neutrality, and EU Supply Chain Act. In reflection of this, an issue has emerged where many companies are assessing suppliers' carbon footprint data, meanwhile lacking proper data collection. In summary, there is a growing confidence in Southeast Asia and Europe for sourcing, but China remains the top choice. < Back SweCham Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2023, 31 March 2023 We would like to warmly thank all members and friends who attended our Annual General Meeting (AGM) last week at the Landmark Bangkok Hotel ! On 30 March, SweCham had the honour of organising our Annual General Meeting (AGM) followed by networking drinks and a delicious dinner. At the AGM, we presented SweCham’s activities over the past year, including a recap of projects and a financial update, followed by the election of board governors. A big congratulation to Mr. Peter Björk who was re-elected for his 4th term as President by the SweCham Board! The evening continued with the special post-meeting dinner. We were honoured to be joined by Mr. Chanin Khaochan, Deputy Secretary General of Thailand Board of Investment, who shared with us updates on the current investment climate in Thailand and the new investment policy that encourages Thailand’s economy to be competitive, innovative and inclusive. Mr. Chanin expressed appreciation of the Thai-Swedish relationship and Swedish investors, welcoming the Swedish expertise in areas such as circular economy, green energy and waste management. We would like to extend our warm thanks to Mr. Chanin Khaochan for the interesting presentation that generated many questions from the floor and a very dynamic discussion. < Back Endline Research Findings on Fishers and Seafood Workers in Thailand by Rapid Asia SweCham member, Rapid Asia, who specialises in social research and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) consulting conducted an interesting research and published report earlier this year. This was an endline survey carried out by Rapid Asia on fishers and seafood workers in Thailand. The study was done on behalf of ILO Ship to Shore Rights Project, funded by the European Union. This was a follow-up study to the baseline survey carried out by Rapid Asia in 2017, using a similar methodology.
