Koh Kood, often described as Thailand’s most pristine island paradise, has been intentionally kept less developed than tourist hotspots such as Phuket or Koh Samui. Yet access to this unique destination has relied on conventional gasoline-powered speedboats – vessels that generate noise, large wakes, and heavy emissions, threatening marine life, shorelines, and the quiet character of the island. In a landmark agreement, Swedish electric boat maker Candela and transport operator Seudamgo have agreed that Seudamgo will take delivery of 10 Candela P-12 hydrofoil vessels for operations in Thailand – the world’s fastest and longest-range electric passenger ship. Candela’s P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels offer a radically different approach than traditional fast ferries and speedboats. Flying above the water on underwater wings, they use up to 80% less energy than traditional boats, produce zero emissions, and leave virtually no wake or noise. With the ability to charge directly from solar power, they enable truly clean and sustainable island transport. With P-12’s in operation, Seudamgo will be able to provide frequent daily departures while dramatically improving the passenger experience: a seasickness-free, whisper-quiet ride in a comfortable cabin, as the P-12 benefits from its digital Flight control system, a computer which automatically adjust the hydrofoils angle of attack in real time to counteract the slamming or pitching found in other vessels. “Candela’s P-12 foil electric technology is a game-changer. It represents a truly sustainable vessel – free from emissions, oil spills, and underwater noise. At the same time, it offers passengers a superior experience – you can’t really get seasick on board a Candela. Collaboration Launches World’s First Carbon-Negative Solar Bus Shelter Prototype < Back Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Architecture and Midsummer Siam Sign MoU to Advance Climate-Positive Architecture and Renewable Energy Integration in Thailand 25 Jun 2026 Collaboration Launches World’s First Carbon-Negative Solar Bus Shelter Prototype Bangkok, Thailand 26 May 2026 - The Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University and Midsummer Siam Co., Ltd. , the Thailand subsidiary of Swedish solar technology company Midsummer AB, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on renewable energy integration, sustainable architecture, low-carbon construction systems and climate-positive urban development in Thailand. The collaboration aims to explore how advanced renewable energy technologies and sustainable building systems can contribute to Thailand’s decarbonization ambitions and future urban transformation. As part of the collaboration, the parties have jointly supported the development of what is believed to be the world’s first carbon-negative solar bus shelter prototype, located in front of the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. The bus shelter prototype combines engineered wood construction — functioning as a long-term carbon sink — with fully integrated lightweight thin-film solar panels from Midsummer. The integrated solar roof generates renewable electricity that can be used for lighting, fans, mobile charging and digital traffic guiding systems while demonstrating new possibilities for climate-positive public infrastructure adapted to tropical urban environments. The initiative serves as a research, innovation and demonstration platform exploring how architecture, renewable energy and sustainable materials can be integrated into future low-carbon city systems. The project may also contribute to future urban sustainability initiatives and inclusive city development efforts in Bangkok and beyond. Perspectives of Stakeholders: Thailand’s Strategies for Coping with Current and Future Floods and Droughts < Back SweCham team attended the launch of the World Bank Thailand Economic Monitor 5 Jul 2023 Perspectives of Stakeholders: Thailand’s Strategies for Coping with Current and Future Floods and Droughts Last Wednesday, 28 June 2023, the SweCham team attended the launch of the World Bank Thailand Economic Monitor ‘Building a Sustainable Future: Coping with Floods and Droughts’ at the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. Professor Dr. Supot Teachavorasinskun, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, and Dr. Fabrizio Zarcone, the World Bank Country Manager for Thailand, jointly delivered an opening statement during the inaugural session of the seminar. This was followed by keynote speeches, presentations and panel discussions by several experts in the area. Thailand experiences recurring floods and droughts each year, which are becoming increasingly severe, particularly in Bangkok, due to overpopulation and geographical factors. This seminar focused on the government’s master plan for water management. Representatives from the World Bank highlighted the escalating water stress in Thailand over the past year. The difficulties in dealing with floods and droughts, particularly in Bangkok, remain unchanged since the affected areas are privately owned. Unfortunately, the solutions available only offer temporary relief. However, private companies in the eastern part of Thailand, such as Amata Water and Indorama Ventures, have actively embraced sustainability and made a commitment to take responsibility for their actions. Ultimately, every speaker emphasised the importance of collaboration from all sectors in Thailand. Without cross-sectoral partnerships, the country will not progress, and the issues will persist. It was an honour for our team to be part of this informative and provocative seminar.
