- Throwback to the Nobel-Inspired Gala: the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce 30th Anniversary
The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 30th anniversary with a grand gala dinner at Marriott Hotel, the Surawongse in Bangkok. < Back Throwback to the Nobel-Inspired Gala: the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce 30th Anniversary 29 Aug 2024 Throwback to our 30th Anniversary, the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce marked a decade of exceptional partnership with a grand gala dinner in Bangkok. This milestone event gathered our esteemed members, friends, and partners from both Thailand and Sweden to celebrate a journey of collaboration and growth. The evening commenced with President, Anders Lundquist, who emphasised the chamber's remarkable growth and the invaluable support it has received from both Thai and international members. He shared a delightful anecdote from the chamber's inauguration, attended by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia at the former Siam Intercontinental Hotel. During his speech, the King humorously remarked that he found their logo ‘not sexy enough.’ Years later, during a meeting in a church garden in Thailand, Khun Anders had the chance to remind the King of this comment, to which the King responded with surprise, asking, ‘Did I really say that?’ In addition, the president also highlighted that the evening's theme was inspired by the Nobel Gala Dinner. He pointed out the similarities in table arrangements to the Nobel banquet held in 1989, coinciding with the awarding of the Nobel prizes in Sweden. This homage to Alfred Nobel, the esteemed founder of the prizes, added a layer of significance to the celebration. Moreover, the gala also recognised Ingvar Krook, a scholarship sponsor for young students associated with the SweCham. Mr Krook shared insights as the former executive director of the Swedish Foreign Trade Association and the Swedish Youth Abroad Foundation, where he played a vital role in providing scholarships for Swedish students. He expressed his satisfaction with the chamber's initiatives and its commitment to promoting Swedish interests abroad. Guests were treated to a delectable menu inspired by the 1989 Nobel banquet, featuring a starter of salmon, a choice of beef or fish for the main course, and a modern interpretation of mango sticky rice for dessert. The evening concluded with a lucky draw, offering impressive prizes. Notably, one guest, Anders Frummerin, won a prize from Husqvarna for the third consecutive time! Given its auspicious start, the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce has been instrumental in fostering economic cooperation and cultural exchange between Thailand and Sweden. The gala provided a captivating journey through the chamber's history, celebrating key achievements, memorable moments, and the individuals who have contributed to its success. - Remembering Tetra Pak's Involvement in ASEAN's First UHT Carton Recycling Project
In 2000, Tetra Pak (Thailand) played a pivotal role in establishing ASEAN’s first recycling plant dedicated to converting used UHT drink cartons into recyclable material. < Back Remembering Tetra Pak's Involvement in ASEAN's First UHT Carton Recycling Project 3 Oct 2024 ‘Tetra Pak supports unique recycling project’ from STEP Magazine Vol. 9/No. 4, August 2000 Tetra Pak (Thai), one of the world's leading suppliers of liquid food processing and packaging systems, is supporting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to set up ASEAN's first recycling plant for converting used UHT drink cartons into a recyclable material. The project is Tetra Pak's tribute to His Majesty the King for his vital role in supporting the country's environmental initiatives. The project is expected to be operational by December 2000. "The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has provided a 2 rai plot of land in Soi On Nuch to house the plant, while Tetra Pak will provide machinery, training and other related technical support for staff. Krungthep Thanakom, a company belonging to the BMA will operate and manage the recycling plant," says Mr. Trond Indseth, Tetra Pak (Thai)'s Managing Director. Magic Eyes has also participated in the project by providing integrated promotional activities to generate awareness and public participation with a special emphasis on schools in Bangkok. The bulk of the raw material will come from used UHT cartons from the BMA's school milk project. Green Board, the material that is produced from the used cartons, can be used to produce sturdy furniture, partitions and gift products. This is the first recycling plant of this kind both in Thailand and ASEAN. The plant will use the same technology as similar recycling projects in Germany, Turkey, China, Pakistan arid Kenya. The recycling plant should enhance awareness of the recycling process and waste management techniques as well as environmental concern among the local population. In addition, the plant adds values to what was essentially garbage. "The recycling plant will help to significantly reduce the cost of collecting and treating household waste. The plant will also create job opportunities in the local community, so the BMA has approved the project and appointed its subsidiary Krungthep Thanakom to manage and operate the plant," says Mr. Somkuan Rawirath, Deputy Permanent Secretary of BMA. Krungthep Thanakom will be responsible for the construction of the plant to house the machinery, which is due to, arrive in October. As a BMA subsidiary, Krungthep Thanakom operates as a non-profit organization. The recycling project represents a climate of cooperation between the private and public sectors for the betterment of environment and improved quality of life, added Krungthep Thanakom Chairman Luen Krisanakri. Promotional activities to build awareness will be handled by Magic Eyes. Senator Khunying Chodchoi Sophonpanich said that a series of activities in schools in Bangkok will begin in September, which will include mini dramas, seminars, newsletters and jingles. Previous Next

Are you inspired by the "Mad Unicorns" Netflix series and Thailand's growing startup scene? It's time to look north to Sweden, the second largest producer of unicorns globally per capita! < Back Meet Sweden — The 2nd largest producer of unicorns globally per capita 18 Jun 2025 We're excited to launch a new blog series dedicated to highlighting the incredible strengths and connections between Thailand and Sweden! This series will delve into various facets of the Thai-Swedish relationship, from cultural ties to business opportunities, and explore how our shared values foster mutual prosperity. Our first article kicks off by tapping into t he popularity of Thai series of Mad Unicorns (สงครามส่งด่วน) , The new Top 10 in Thailand Netflix series inspired by the real-life journey of Thailand's first logistics "unicorn" (a startup valued at over a billion dollars)- Flash Express. has ignited the a nationwide fascination with the magic and potential of startup success. Credit: IMDb Did you know? While Silicon Valley often captures the spotlight in the world of groundbreaking innovation and billion-dollar valuations, did you know that Sweden is the second largest producer of unicorns per capita globally? This small Nordic nation, known for its stunning landscapes and innovative spirit, has consistently punched above its weight, churning out global giants like Spotify, Skype, Klarna, and Mojang (creators of Minecraft), to name just a few. What's Sweden's Secret to Startup Success? Sweden's success isn't just about a few brilliant ideas; it's a culmination of several key factors that create a fertile ground for startups to flourish: A Culture of Innovation and Collaboration: Sweden fosters an environment where new ideas are encouraged, and collaboration is key. From government initiatives to educational institutions, there's a strong emphasis on research and development, open-mindedness, and a willingness to embrace change. This co-creation creates a supportive ecosystem for Swedish startups. Strong Digital Infrastructure and Early Adoption: Sweden has long been a leader in digital transformation. High internet penetration, a tech-savvy population, and widespread digital literacy provide a robust foundation for tech-driven businesses to scale rapidly. Access to Capital and Supportive Ecosystems: While not as vast as Silicon Valley, Sweden has a maturing venture capital landscape and a supportive ecosystem of incubators, accelerators, and mentorship programs. This network helps promising startups secure funding and guidance through their growth journey, benefiting Thai businesses looking to expand. Global Mindset from Day One: Swedish startups often think globally from their inception. The relatively small domestic market encourages companies to internationalize early, building products and services with a worldwide audience in mind. Emphasis on Work-Life Balance and Social Welfare: This might seem counter-intuitive to startup hustle, but Sweden's strong social safety net and emphasis on work-life balance contribute to a happier, healthier, and ultimately more productive workforce, attracting and retaining top talent in the startup ecosystem . Lessons for Thailand's Business Landscape The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce is committed to bridging these two vibrant nations, facilitating knowledge exchange, and promoting partnerships that can help unlock Thailand's full entrepreneurial potential. Let's learn from the land of unicorns and empower Thailand's next generation of startup success stories!
