- Remembering Tetra Pak's Involvement in ASEAN's First UHT Carton Recycling Project
In 2000, Tetra Pak (Thailand) played a pivotal role in establishing ASEAN’s first recycling plant dedicated to converting used UHT drink cartons into recyclable material. < Back Remembering Tetra Pak's Involvement in ASEAN's First UHT Carton Recycling Project 3 Oct 2024 ‘Tetra Pak supports unique recycling project’ from STEP Magazine Vol. 9/No. 4, August 2000 Tetra Pak (Thai), one of the world's leading suppliers of liquid food processing and packaging systems, is supporting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to set up ASEAN's first recycling plant for converting used UHT drink cartons into a recyclable material. The project is Tetra Pak's tribute to His Majesty the King for his vital role in supporting the country's environmental initiatives. The project is expected to be operational by December 2000. "The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has provided a 2 rai plot of land in Soi On Nuch to house the plant, while Tetra Pak will provide machinery, training and other related technical support for staff. Krungthep Thanakom, a company belonging to the BMA will operate and manage the recycling plant," says Mr. Trond Indseth, Tetra Pak (Thai)'s Managing Director. Magic Eyes has also participated in the project by providing integrated promotional activities to generate awareness and public participation with a special emphasis on schools in Bangkok. The bulk of the raw material will come from used UHT cartons from the BMA's school milk project. Green Board, the material that is produced from the used cartons, can be used to produce sturdy furniture, partitions and gift products. This is the first recycling plant of this kind both in Thailand and ASEAN. The plant will use the same technology as similar recycling projects in Germany, Turkey, China, Pakistan arid Kenya. The recycling plant should enhance awareness of the recycling process and waste management techniques as well as environmental concern among the local population. In addition, the plant adds values to what was essentially garbage. "The recycling plant will help to significantly reduce the cost of collecting and treating household waste. The plant will also create job opportunities in the local community, so the BMA has approved the project and appointed its subsidiary Krungthep Thanakom to manage and operate the plant," says Mr. Somkuan Rawirath, Deputy Permanent Secretary of BMA. Krungthep Thanakom will be responsible for the construction of the plant to house the machinery, which is due to, arrive in October. As a BMA subsidiary, Krungthep Thanakom operates as a non-profit organization. The recycling project represents a climate of cooperation between the private and public sectors for the betterment of environment and improved quality of life, added Krungthep Thanakom Chairman Luen Krisanakri. Promotional activities to build awareness will be handled by Magic Eyes. Senator Khunying Chodchoi Sophonpanich said that a series of activities in schools in Bangkok will begin in September, which will include mini dramas, seminars, newsletters and jingles. Previous Next

- A Night to Remember: The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce’s 10-Year Jubilee
As SweCham gears up to celebrate its 35th anniversary this November, we reflect on the grand 10-year jubilee held in February 1999. < Back A Night to Remember: The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce’s 10-Year Jubilee 22 Aug 2024 ‘Ten years after and still going strong’ by Christer Nilsson from STEP Magazine Vol. 8/No. 1, February 1999 The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce’ ten-year jubilee on Saturday 6 February was celebrated in grand style at The Oriental, with the most enduring swingers still dancing the night away as Sunday morning approached. Others took refuge at the long bar in the Grand Ballroom, quenching their thirst with whatever wet stuff left in the early hours. But the evening began on a more serious note. After the Thai and Swedish national anthems were played in front of the over 150 participants, our Ambassador, H.E. Ms. Inga Eriksson Fogh, toasted the Kings of Sweden and Thailand and read a telegram from His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf congratulating the TSCC on its 10th anniversary. The royal telegram has its reasons. Sweden's King and Queen graced the birth of what was then the Thai Swedish Business Association with their presence, here in Bangkok ten years ago. The dinner that followed had it all. But a special hurrah for the delicious Bisque Vasa, a marriage between the king of Thai soups, Tom Yam Gung, and a French Bisque D'Hommard. A culinary luk kreung. As avec Swedish punsch, courtesly provided by the Swedish Ambassador, was served as an alternative to the traditional cognac. Cigar aficionados rounded off the meal puffing a Montague, Swedish Match' premium brand cigar, that was on sale at the ball. Then music, lottery and dance. Over 50 lottery prizes were donated by more than 20 TSCC members. Thanks to the organizers, the sponsors and to everyone who participated and made this a night to remember! Previous Next
