While the spotlight shone brightly on Sweden's National Day on June 6 (which has already passed), the jubilant celebrations continue to echo throughout the entire year! Rewind 500 years: On 6 June 1523, Gustav Vasa ascended to the throne as Sweden's king, elected by an assembly in the historic Strängnäs, only 59 kilometres west of Stockholm. This pivotal moment witnessed Sweden leaving the Kalmar Union and became an independent state. SweCham was very honoured to participate in the festivities at the Swedish Residence last Thursday, 16 November. The Embassy played host to a reception, extending a warm welcome to H.E. Mrs. Anna Hammargren, the new ambassador of Sweden in Thailand. The occasion also marked Sweden's remarkable 500 years of existence and the 50-year reign of King Carl XVI Gustaf. The tourism recovery slowed, with fewer tourist arrivals particularly from China. Inflation turned negative for the first time in over a year, prompting the Bank of Thailand to lower its policy rate amid a dimmer economic outlook. Financial markets experienced volatility due to global trade uncertainty. The Thai baht depreciated against the US dollar in early April, before notably appreciating in the following weeks. Since joining the SAS Executive Leadership Team on August 14, 2023, Verhagen has overseen significant developments in SAS’s operations. After a 10-year hiatus, SAS made a significant return to the Thai market in 2023, capitalizing on the strong resurgence in global tourism. A major milestone in this comeback was the launch of the airline’s inaugural direct flight from Copenhagen to Bangkok, marking a fresh chapter for SAS in the region.
