- NIST International School Students Win Global Awards
Students from NIST have been recognised for their innovative solution at the 2022 Diamond Challenge < Back NIST International School Students Win Global Awards 22 Mar 2023 We would like to offer big congratulations to the students from NIST International School in Bangkok who have been recognised for their innovative solution at the 2022 Diamond Challenge, a global entrepreneurship competition for high school students. The team, led by Mix, Setsiri Chaiyosburana, was awarded ‘The Global Innovation Prize,’ one of the only two such prizes awarded to the 700 teams from 37 countries and 28 states who competed in the competition. The team presented NANO-L, an anti-pathogenic coating that incorporates silver nanoparticles to effectively eliminate pathogens. What sets NANO-L apart from other anti-pathogenic coatings is the environmentally friendly production process it employs. Sugarcane leaves are used to create silver nanoparticles, which were inspired by Setsiri Chaiyosburana's trips to visit his grandparents in Kanchanaburi, where he witnessed sugarcane fields emitting plumes of black smoke during the burning season. NANO-L's remarkable achievements go beyond the Diamond Challenge Global Innovation Prize, as it also received acclaim in other international competitions such as the iCAN competition in Canada, and the WICO and Inventions Geneva competitions. Setsiri hopes that the accolades they have received will inspire more opportunities for Thai youth inventors to showcase their practical and innovative ideas. The focus was on the public service centre for investors and foreigners. Secretary General of PACC Bhumivisan Kasemsook introduced several issues and goals. Raising Thailand’s CPI Score, he emphasised the need to elevate Thailand’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score and that the PACC is committed to having a reliable Complaint Centre to improve foreign investors’ confidence by providing a dependable avenue for lodging complaints. The Secretary-General shed light on a harrowing case involving a businessman who was extorted for multi-million Baht bribes to resolve his tax issues. Following a sting operation, the corrupt official was arrested and found to have amassed assets from illicit activities. The panel discussion comprised leaders from the Thailand Chamber of Commerce, the Strategic Transformation Office, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority. They discussed: Three Key Points: Inconvenience, lack of transparency and uncertainty. Legal Reforms: The need for urgent law reform was highlighted, along with focusing on ease of doing business. Public and Private Sector Involvement: Both sectors were encouraged to collaborate in the fight against corruption. The panel discussion highlighted a few different Transparency Initiatives: Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA): The BMA uses this website, traffy.in.th , to facilitate complaints ranging from corruption to noise. ISO 37001: Implementation of an anti-bribery management system. The Final Takeaways of the seminar are, Individual Responsibility: ‘Silence lets corruption grow; see something, say something!’. Continuity: Anti-corruption efforts must continue irrespective of who is in the government. Whistleblower Protection: Safeguarding whistleblowers and encouraging reporting are crucial steps. If you have been affected by corruption, please get in touch with PACC on Hotline: 1206#9 and Email investor.center@pacc.go.th Previous Next

- World Bank: Thailand Monthly Economic Monitor
To keep you updated with Thailand's economy, a summary of the World Bank's Thailand Monthly Economic Monitor, May 2023 has been prepared for you. < Back World Bank: Thailand Monthly Economic Monitor 31 May 2023 World Bank: Thailand Monthly Economic Monitor summary The economy is moderately expanding as consumption grows with support from the recovering tourism and labour market. In contrast, manufacturing production and exported goods were in decline due to the decline in external demand. Tourism has picked up from the previous months with a higher number of Chinese visitors and tour groups. There is also an increase in visitors from India, ASEAN, and Europe. Exported goods in March 2023 had the lowest rate compared to the other months of the year, but Thailand is still performing reasonably well compared to the neighbouring countries in Asia. Inflation rate decreases due to wide-range price reductions with lower core and raw food inflation. On the other hand, the energy price inflation increases. As a result of the decline in global oil prices, the government imposes caps on energy prices to alleviate inflation. Fiscal deficit decreases but as the government introduces the cost-of-living support measure, the deficit will remain high. Measures such as electricity price caps would require government subsidies from the central budget. The government also impose a tax cut on diesel to help with the increasing oil price. The government suggested four measures for tax reform: 1) reviewing tax structure; 2) adjusting the system with digital economy; 3) tax reduction for the environmentally friendly activities, and 4) fairer tax approach. These goals will accelerate fiscal consolidation under the medium-term budgetary plan. Thai Baht appreciates in line with the Nominal Effective Exchange Rate as a result of the rise in account surplus. The causes of the surplus were reduction in oil imports and an increase in tourism in the past months.
