< Back APAC SwedCham Webinar: Can food systems enable a sustainable and resilient food value chain for tomorrow?, 14 November 2023 The Swedish Australian Chamber of Commerce (SACC) recently hosted a thought-provoking APAC SwedCham webinar, titled ‘Can Food Systems Enable Sustainable and Resilient Food Value Chain for Tomorrow?’ on 14 November 2023. The webinar aimed to address the pressing issue of food loss and waste (FLW), which contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, impacting climate stability and triggering extreme weather events. Distinguished industry specialists from Alfa Laval, Tetra Pak Group, and ABB delved into approaches to address sustainable food and beverage systems problems and provide some innovative solutions. Patrick Horner, Global Technology Lead for Waste Evaporation and Zero Liquid Discharge at Alfa Laval, Denmark, explored the role of water stewardship and circularity in promoting sustainability within the food industry, giving a case study such as how they transform the brewery wastewater management and reduce the water footprint in food production. Katie Carson, Director Corporate Affairs Food & Climate Policy, Tetra Pak Group, Belgium, shared strategies to reduce food loss and waste. She emphasised responsible corporate practices, from measuring food loss and waste across the food supply chain to fostering education and awareness-raising initiatives on food loss and waste prevention. John Rieusset, Sector Lead – Food and Beverage, ABB Australia Pty Ltd, focused on the critical aspects of reducing energy and food waste in food and beverage manufacturing plants with ABB’s technologies. ABB also has expertise that could help food and beverage producers lower their energy consumption without sacrificing productivity, contributing to more efficient and sustainable operations. On 22 August, SweCham team members attended an anti-corruption event hosted by the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, also known as PACC.  The focus was on the public service centre for investors and foreigners.   Secretary General of PACC Bhumivisan Kasemsook introduced several issues and goals.  Raising Thailand’s CPI Score, he emphasised the need to elevate Thailand’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score and that the PACC is committed to having a reliable Complaint Centre to improve foreign investors’ confidence by providing a dependable avenue for lodging complaints.  < Back SweCham Attended the PACC 2023: Public Relations Project on the Public Service Center for Investors and Foreigners 22 Aug 2023 On 22 August, SweCham team members attended an anti-corruption event hosted by the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, also known as PACC. The focus was on the public service centre for investors and foreigners. Secretary General of PACC Bhumivisan Kasemsook introduced several issues and goals. The Secretary-General shed light on a harrowing case involving a businessman who was extorted for multi-million Baht bribes to resolve his tax issues. Following a sting operation, the corrupt official was arrested and found to have amassed assets from illicit activities. The panel discussion comprised leaders from the Thailand Chamber of Commerce, the Strategic Transformation Office, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority. They discussed: Three Key Points: Inconvenience, lack of transparency and uncertainty. Legal Reforms: The need for urgent law reform was highlighted, along with focusing on ease of doing business. Public and Private Sector Involvement: Both sectors were encouraged to collaborate in the fight against corruption. The panel discussion highlighted a few different Transparency Initiatives: Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA): The BMA uses this website, traffy.in.th , to facilitate complaints ranging from corruption to noise. ISO 37001: Implementation of an anti-bribery management system. The Final Takeaways of the seminar are, Individual Responsibility: ‘Silence lets corruption grow; see something, say something!’. Continuity: Anti-corruption efforts must continue irrespective of who is in the government. Whistleblower Protection: Safeguarding whistleblowers and encouraging reporting are crucial steps. On 3 October, SweCham with the support from the C ASEAN Committee, held the ‘Re: Waste, Rethink, Resources’ session on the SX Sustainability Expo 2023 Talk Stage at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). < Back SweCham, Embassy of Sweden and C ASEAN Committee joined forces at SX Sustainability Expo 2023 Talk Stage! 12 Oct 2023 On 3 October, SweCham with the support from the C ASEAN Committee, held the ‘ Re: Waste, Rethink, Resources ’ session on the SX Sustainability Expo 2023 Talk Stage at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). H.E. Mrs. Anna Hammargren (Ambassador of Sweden to Thailand) begun her opening remarks by asking why the focus was on waste. The reason being, that if waste is not properly managed, it leads to a lot of methane gas which effects our societies, economies, and our own health. To minimise waste, the ambassador urged that everyone needs to do their part. She argued that states need to invest and change policies for recycling, which could save billions. Companies also need to be responsible. This could be achieved by focusing on the lifespan of their products and their whole supply chain. As for the consumers, they need to do their part by being conscious of what they buy. The ambassador concluded by stating that Sweden stands up for the values when it comes to sustainability and so are the companies on this stage. The first speaker, Mr. Sean Too (Managing Director, Sentinel Solution, Altered), spoke about how precious the water is on the planet and how we need to rethink the way we use water. This concern lays the foundation of Sentinel Solution ’s actions. Mr. Sean Too highlighted that agriculture is one of the biggest issues when it comes to water consumption. However, hotels are also substantial consumers of water. He urged that we all become more conservative with water usage -after all, water is a common resource that we all share. Sentinel Solution has consequently developed a product that helps to reduce the water spillage. The next speaker, Dr. Worawut Waruttamapornsu (Managing Director, Hitachi Energy Thailand), emphasised how Hitachi Energy aims to offer leading products in the environmental space and redefine sustainability. They have developed the eco-portfolio for a carbon-neutral energy future called EconiQ. EconiQ is a portfolio which mixes products, services, and solutions, which all are provided by Hitachi Energy. For example, the EconiQ high-voltage portfolio achieves its goal by incorporating innovative technology that eliminates the use of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), a potent greenhouse gas, thus reducing carbon footprint. The final speaker Mr. Patinya Silsupadol (Head of Sustainability, Tetra Pak Thailand), spoke about the importance of circular economy and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). He emphasised that this transformation to a circular economy cannot be done alone from Tetra Pak ’s side, and that they need collaboration from industry partners and customers. He highlighted that Tetra Pak does it best to work with municipalities when it comes to the recycling process and recycling facilities. Therefore, the focus on EPR runs through the decisions made at Tetra Pak. He concluded by stating that the recycling responsibility needs to be extended, something Tetra Pak is willing to do as a Swedish company and producer. We then went to Chinatown, and had deli cious dim sum for lunch before exploring the rich culture and heritage of this part of Bangkok. We visited a Chinese temple Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, and Leng Buai Ia Shrine, which are both at the heart of this multicultural community! After being out in the very hot weather, we decided to cool down with some hot tea at Double Dogs Tearoom. Following a fun day of exploration and good tea, we finished the day by fixing our sweet tooth with some dessert at a local cafe! However, new diseases require innovative drugs developed through clinical trials. Khun Roman Ramos, President of the Association of Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers (PReMA) and Country President of AstraZeneca Thailand, believes Thailand could become a clinical research hub in Southeast Asia due to its strong healthcare infrastructure and expert professionals. Government support, including streamlined approvals, tax incentives, and initiatives like the Eastern Economic Corridor, enhances this potential. Becoming a clinical research hub would boost Thailand's economy and improve public health by providing hospitals with better equipment and quicker drug market entry. Despite these advantages, challenges include extending research beyond urban hospitals and speeding up drug approvals.
