This initiative, implemented on December 1, now applies to flights departing from Copenhagen, Oslo, Arlanda, and Gothenburg. By adopting these sustainable alternatives whenever single-use food packaging is required, SAS has taken a practical step toward reducing waste and supporting industry-wide efforts to lower environmental impact. Through collaboration with its suppliers, SAS has introduced an innovative, fully sealed cardboard barrier that meets food-grade standards without the need for traditional plastic coatings. This development is part of a broader shift toward reusable and biodegradable materials, supporting SAS’ ambition to achieve 100% sustainable materials by 2030. “As an airline, our primary goal is decarbonization, which involves sustainable choices in fleet, fuel, and operations,” commented SAS Vice President of Product and Loyalty, Aron Backström. Replacing single-use plastics on board is a great example of how we are working to address our impact through what we can control today. Eliminating single-use plastics is a tangible way we can reduce our environmental impact immediately, showing how small steps add up in the journey toward more sustainable aviation. We’re also offering this sustainable packaging solution to other food producers, which expands its impact industry-wide.” In addition to plastic reduction, SAS’ cabin sustainability efforts include minimizing onboard waste and optimizing cabin materials to achieve weight reduction, which directly decreases fuel consumption and associated emissions. By exploring reusable materials and reducing packaging, SAS also contributes to the aviation sector’s broader fuel efficiency goals. “Achieving these sustainability milestones requires everyone’s support, and we’re committed to making these changes as seamless and beneficial as possible for all passengers”, added Aron Backström. “While change can feel challenging at first, together we can embrace these alternatives, like biodegradable packaging and reduced waste, for a more sustainable future.” SAS’ ongoing initiatives form part of a long-term environmental strategy aimed at reducing emissions and promoting cleaner energy sources. For example, these efforts include: Fleet renewal: Newer, fuel-efficient aircraft like the Airbus A350 and Airbus A320neo reduce fuel use and emissions. Biofuel transition : Expanding the use of biofuels to lower dependency on fossil fuels. Optimized flight operations : Efficiency practices like streamlined takeoffs, optimized flight paths, and fuel-saving strategies are part of each flight’s journey to minimize environmental impact. Future innovation : Together with partners SAS is actively involved in developing hydrogen-powered and electric aircraft with the aim of achieving zero-emission aviation. Previous Next

- Candela Electric Hydrofoil Ferries to Serve Thailand’s Pristine Koh Kood Island
Bangkok / Stockholm, October 2, 2025 – At a ceremony in Bangkok, Swedish electric boat maker Candela and Thai operator Seudamgo by Leopard Transportation Co., Ltd. entered an agreement for 10 Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferries to initially operate on the route between the mainland and Koh Kood in Trat province. < Back Candela Electric Hydrofoil Ferries to Serve Thailand’s Pristine Koh Kood Island 2 Oct 2025 Bangkok / Stockholm, October 2, 2025 – At a ceremony in Bangkok, Swedish electric boat maker Candela and Thai operator Seudamgo by Leopard Transportation Co., Ltd. entered an agreement for 10 Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferries to initially operate on the route between the mainland and Koh Kood in Trat province. Koh Kood, often described as Thailand’s most pristine island paradise, has been intentionally kept less developed than tourist hotspots such as Phuket or Koh Samui. Yet access to this unique destination has relied on conventional gasoline-powered speedboats – vessels that generate noise, large wakes, and heavy emissions, threatening marine life, shorelines, and the quiet character of the island. In a landmark agreement, Swedish electric boat maker Candela and transport operator Seudamgo have agreed that Seudamgo will take delivery of 10 Candela P-12 hydrofoil vessels for operations in Thailand – the world’s fastest and longest-range electric passenger ship. Candela’s P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels offer a radically different approach than traditional fast ferries and speedboats. Flying above the water on underwater wings, they use up to 80% less energy than traditional boats, produce zero emissions, and leave virtually no wake or noise. With the ability to charge directly from solar power, they enable truly clean and sustainable island transport. With P-12’s in operation, Seudamgo will be able to provide frequent daily departures while dramatically improving the passenger experience: a seasickness-free, whisper-quiet ride in a comfortable cabin, as the P-12 benefits from its digital Flight control system, a computer which automatically adjust the hydrofoils angle of attack in real time to counteract the slamming or pitching found in other vessels. “Candela’s P-12 foil electric technology is a game-changer. It represents a truly sustainable vessel – free from emissions, oil spills, and underwater noise. At the same time, it offers passengers a superior experience – you can’t really get seasick on board a Candela. We are proud to be the first to bring this unique technology to Thailand and South-East Asia,” says Surachai Suwanthanakul, CEO of Leopard Transportation Co., Ltd.. The 10 vessels will be the upscale Business version of P-12, featuring premium seating and a spacious, airy interior for 20 passengers, along with ample luggage capacity. Cruising at 25+ knots, the vessels will cover the 20-nautical mile route in just 40 minutes. Most importantly, the new fleet will help preserve the region’s pristine environment, ensuring that tourism growth can continue without sacrificing the island’s unique natural beauty. “This agreement demonstrates how Thailand can leapfrog directly to sustainable waterborne transport,” said Gustav Hasselskog, founder and CEO of Candela. “By replacing noisy, polluting speedboats with our electric flying ships, Seudamgo is protecting one of Thailand’s most beautiful destinations.” Thailand is home to Candela’s largest office outside Sweden, located in Bangkok, and is a key market for the Swedish electromobility company thanks to its vast waterborne transport sector and more than 1,500 islands – many of which rank among the world’s top tourist destinations. “Thailand is one of the most exciting markets in for sustainable water transport,” says Björn Antonsson, Candela’s Regional CEO Asia-Pacific. “With its thousands of islands, big rivers and vibrant tourism industry, the country can truly benefit from our technology. Partnering with Seudamgo to introduce the P-12 fleet is a fantastic beginning – we see enormous potential to expand clean, efficient hydrofoil transport across Thailand and the wider region.” The signing ceremony took place during SX Sustainability Expo, the largest of its kind in South-East Asia and was witnessed by the Governor of Trat as well as by representatives from Ministry of Transport and the Swedish Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. - SAS: A New Chapter for Scandinavian Airlines
The Executive Director of the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, Anna Olsson-Moore, and President Peter Björk, along with representatives from the Norwegian and Danish Chambers of Commerce, had the privilege of meeting Paul Verhagen, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). < Back SAS: A New Chapter for Scandinavian Airlines 14 Nov 2024 The Executive Director of the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, Anna Olsson-Moore, and President Peter Björk, along with representatives from the Norwegian and Danish Chambers of Commerce, had the privilege of meeting Paul Verhagen, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). Since joining the SAS Executive Leadership Team on August 14, 2023, Verhagen has overseen significant developments in SAS’s operations. During his recent visit to Bangkok, he provided key updates on SAS’s renewed routes to Thailand and shared the airline’s ambitious plans for further expansion in the region. This insightful discussion, hosted in collaboration with other Nordic Chambers at the Pacific Club, also underscored SAS’s intention to add more destinations as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence in Southeast Asia. After a 10-year hiatus, SAS made a significant return to the Thai market in 2023, capitalizing on the strong resurgence in global tourism. A major milestone in this comeback was the launch of the airline’s inaugural direct flight from Copenhagen to Bangkok, marking a fresh chapter for SAS in the region. This new route is part of the airline’s strategy to tap into the growing Scandinavian market, which had seen a decline in travel to Thailand prior to the pandemic due to economic challenges. With Thailand’s tourism industry bouncing back, SAS’s return to the Thai market comes at an ideal moment, and the airline is focused on reinforcing its connections with the Scandinavian region. The 2023 launch of the Copenhagen-Bangkok route signals SAS’s commitment to enhancing its network and catering to the rising demand for travel to Thailand. Previous Next
